Title: 6.5 grendel
Post by: Hobby hunter on April 13, 2022, 09:40:03 pm
This is another cartridge I play around with. I have a howa mini chambered in it. I've stiffened the fore end of the stock with epoxy resin and its now got custom bottom metal on it. Before that I did a mod to the bottom plastic to stop it squashing when trying to tighten it up. Here's some loads I've tried in it to date.
90gr speer tnt 32gr cfe223 2584fps
120gr speer gold dot 31gr 748 2670fps
85gr sierra hp 30.2gr 2219 2965fps
85gr sierra hp 31gr win748 2700fps this is the load I run in this rifle.
I'm using hornady brass but I'm finding I'm getting a lot of split necks after about the third firing. I've got some starline brass to try and also bought an annealing machine. Best groups are with the last load and the gold dots

loaded up a batch for the grendel today that had been through the annealer. Not being too scientific but in my job you have to have a good feel for mechanical things and the seating pressure required felt very consistent. Now to see If I get less split necks..

Split necks are caused by overworking brass. While annealing removes the stress, a loading program that moves the brass the least can make life easier.
A Lee Collet die is what you need, if they make one for this cartridge.

No they dont. I did think of buying a hornady neck sizing die and cutting it shorter as the grendel case is to short to reach the sizing part.

I mentioned that there was dies on their site when I rang today but they are all gone. I think the lee dies are specific to each caliber. Got one for my 6.5x55 and one for my 22 hornet they are good dies.
