We have a local "little library" aka "sharing shelf" aka "free opshop"... I trade out books there with the district, some interesting things come through (and a lot of crap too!)

I keep a library with all my reference books (native plants, birds, gunsmithing/reference, engineering, medical/rongoa, automotive manuals, dictionaries, bibles, cartoons...) and tend to rotate out the novels, though I keep the classics.

Still on the lookout for footrot flats! Grandparents used to have just about the whole set, which has disappeared to time. Also Calvin Hobbes.

Got a few things on PC too, which is a pain in the ass as I'm never going to sit and read a book on the computer, and don't have an e-reader...

General Discussion / Re: Firearm Register
« on: June 06, 2023, 01:24:38 pm »
At least one party says they intend to scrap it. Time will tell

ACT (who have Nicole on board still?) is the sanest vote. Leighton Baker, Freedom Party and others... wont achieve the parliamentary threshold, IMO.

But...who actually came out to talk to our men, women and children at the parliament ground protest? (asides from 600 cops - 4 times more cops than they managed to put up for the crisis in Esk Valley)

I feel it doesn't matter which party colour flag is up the pole.
They're all as bad as each other and none would have done any different. Some interesting videos coming through of dr. Reti (northland national mp) being called out about mandates etc... he been f@cken quiet the last few years though! :D

General Discussion / Firearm Register
« on: June 06, 2023, 09:31:11 am »
Yes. The incompetents who couldn't administer the former B and E registers (or even the base licensing system) are now taking on a register probably 5 times the size.

"Registration before confiscation" so one of my more skeptical gun-nut -ahem- "firearm enthusiast" mates says.
Heard rumours of ammo restrictions (a la UK legislation) coming as well...

Don't get caught out guys.

Long time no ping! Hello again to all.

Always satisfying work on old guns. If you want some idea of what projectile weights will generally do best, check the barrel twist. Faster twist stabilise heavier projectiles... Never had a .243 so can't comment what specific weights, but driving a lighter projectile faster will tend to shrink groups.

One comment though. (It's not just you, the world seems to have gone mad on this) Is on videos... please please turn your phone sideways!!

Optics and accessories / Re: Brief scope comparison

Yeah. I do have a leupy that's worth a bit of coin.
But honestly it's not like I look through it and say wow...it does the job I expect of every scope (and actually has a small "eye box"), and sure it might (or might not) take a bit more of a beating, last a bit longer...remains to be seen.
A lot of my optics are older Japanese glass (nikko, tasco). Got a WW2 vintage german which is still clear and holds zero. A bushnell (?) that needs reassembling and a few others besides

mmmmmmmmm. Coach gun.
#metoo.

There's a fulla out east auckland, was on nzhs forum, trying to get a bizo going making knives. I got one of his early demo ones.
Had to modify it quite a bit to fit my hand well, but it's sharp as all get-out, so his work on steel heat-treat and grinding is right-on. I'm sure he'd custom anything you like.
Otherwise any boring old shop humping-fisting, engineering, or farm supply will have svörds (nz made too) and other quite acceptable knives.

I have something of a pile of scopes. Mostly 4x 32 kind of size. I'll have  rummage and see if anything suits ya.

Hawke optics are the another worth looking at. Air-rifle rated so you know they'll take a beating. Distributor is up in Whangarei.

While you CAN kill just about anything with a .22LR...

I would say .22WMR at a minimum, for most goat shooters, assuming you can get within 60 yards or so, and shoot good.
The problem with the little rimfires on light bodied animals is meat wastage (or a potential lack of penetration) if going for heart/lung shots.
Brain stem shots obviate this...but you have to be able to pull them off, ten times out of ten.

But going up to centrefire gives you more room for error. .357, 30-30, 7.62x39, .22hornet, .222, .223, 6.5x47...
Just have to know your gear, your ranges, your ability.

Is this out Clevedon ways?

Interesting... never  seen em. Don't think I've seen any winchester branded projos, come to think of it.

Pics? Do they have the definite heel like a rimfire pill?

It was the SSANZ "military and hunting" fair they advertised up here, last month.

Hah, wrong time wrong place I guess. Though loading brass hulls I need 11ga over powder and 10ga overshot (another lathe project - making punches)

The brass hulls take LP or LR primers. I think I bought the last 209s in the country. But I'm fairly well stocked all round.
Have a couple thousand SR primers I might trade but not in a hurry.

Not bad machines the old colchesters. Jeez if I had a lathe at work, I wouldn't be getting any work done.

This one's a Southbend "Heavy 10". Thirty inches between centres so can fit up all but the longest barrels, and near enough 40mm through the head.
Certainly a step down in size from my other lathes which will swing about 1 and a half foot and a yard and a half long. (Still accurate though, just take time to warm up the bearings. - not so good for quick small one-offs. Bloody brilliant for peeling big chips all day. And that's what I'll make my cannons on :D)

Nice, nice. (Pics would be nicer - especially the necked aught-sixes. I like like those kind of cartridges.
Always on the prowl for a 22- or 25-303

I'm working far too bloody much and weekends are about five days too short. I did pick myself up another lathe though. Hopefully the last one I'll ever buy. Got a few .45 cal projects for it  also gotta make parts to convert the MEC to load 2.5" and to deprime LP primers rather than the 209s.

And I did go through my brass bucket and deprime/size a whole heap ready for tumbling. (Just have to dig my bloody tumbler out from wherever it is!)
And I did pick up a couple packs of 12ga brass. And a slug mould. So I haven't been entirely useless.

I meant to get along to the arms fair up here but must have been late, drove past and no lights, no music...no signs or anything else either.

If you come across old 12ga tools, especially a roll crimper and brass adjustable shot dipper... shot maker... anything really. Grab it and I'll pay ya. Or an ishapore. (Enfield converted to .410) :D

Boss has been on a couple deer hunts. One down palmy ways, shot big hind, and got a woodhill ballot (Saw heaps, didn't shoot any) I'm hassling my neighbour to tag along next time he goes south. Private block, infested apparently, the cocky has to honk their horn te get the deer out the road!!

Hope you're well mate.

Glad I dont have to apply for a fal now. The renewal took a year to get done when I did it.
Just apply for a mongrel patch instead. Keep all your guns and pick which (if any) other rules you want to follow. lol.
