Firearms / 22 hornet project
« on: October 08, 2023, 09:04:29 pm »
Finished another project I've been tossing up weather to do or not. This one is a 22 hornet k conversion. I imported a reamer from the us. I have 3 hornets and I picked my single shot nef as the first candidate as I could take the barrel off and see what's going on as I reamed the chamber easier than a bolt action. I reamed the chamber using plenty of lube and going slow. Its turned out well and I had it out fireforming brass for it over the weekend. Happy with it so far..

Firearms / Home made case lube
« on: September 09, 2023, 01:55:49 pm »
Tried the home made case lube today on some 243 Ive loaded up to test accuracy on the ph of wifes. Very unscientific way of making it but I used the empty dillon case lube spray bottle, put about a teaspoon of solid lanolin in and filled it up with ipa. It took quite a while for lanolin to dissolve but no worries, I'm not one of those guys that wants instant results as a lot do these days. Pleased to say worked really well and quite a lot cheaper than ready made label brand stuff.

Firearms / Something to do
« on: July 03, 2023, 06:50:09 am »
Rainy crappy weather so needed to find something to do inside. Nothing amazing, I've got a few things sitting around idly so had a look a what I had. First a slazenger m55 that's had a rail fitted to it then a rummage around and I came up with some mounts and a period (sort of) tasco 4x40 scope, one with the old tv screen type view when you look through it. Threw it together to see how it felt and looked. Looks ok scopes clear but could do with lower mounts. Metal work needs a bit of a tidy up and reblue might even thread it for a suppressor, and while I'm at it may as well redo the stock. I just want to take it out and shoot it and make sure its ok in that department and then ill do the reblue and wood. After I've done that one I've got another aussie to do as well, a sportco semi.

Firearms / Another retro rifle
« on: March 26, 2023, 09:40:41 pm »
Just been on a bit of a holiday down south a bit, and as usual a visit to a local fun shop is on the list of things to do when on holiday right. So in I went and had a look through the second hand firearms and in amongst them was a remington 600 mohawk in 243. Took it off the rack and had a good look at it, it was a bit knocked around but to be expected from a rifle of that age but hadnt been butchered so wasnt anything to worry to much about. Its also wearing a scope from the same era it looks to be a 4x40 redfield of some type. Havnt shot it yet but ill put something up when I do. All in all a nice set up that ill just give a tidy up and it can keep the other retro rifle company.

General Discussion / Wild night in Auckland area
« on: January 28, 2023, 10:33:40 am »
Well youve all seen the pictures, what a night. Took 7hrs to get home which usually takes 40min. Car didnt like it and Ive done damage to the engine, but that was pretty minor compared to the damage I saw. On the slow trip home I saw flooded houses floating cars, a full sized bus washed off the road. Met a lot of people at the many stops waiting for the waters to recede low enough to be passable. Spirits were good and everyone helped each other in true kiwi style.

Hunting / First possum shoot for the year
« on: January 22, 2023, 11:29:15 am »
Had my first possum shoot for the year last night, but the day started differently. First off a mate and I did a clay bird shoot for a hens party. Everyone had a great time and the ladies got to tick something off their bucket list, then it was pack everything up head home and get possum gear ready. I decided to take doggy for his first shoot as well and to my surprise he was perfect. I had thoughts of having to chase him all over the farm or getting scared of the rifle shooting. It was suppressed so I think that helped. I got out to the farm while there was still some light as I like to do a quick recon to see where the stock is and see what the ground is like. I only had a small area to work in but it was still an area that held some possums. I was using my chopper, that's what I call my shortened sportco semi that I've cut and threaded for a suppressor. Its a handy little rifle that's a joy to carry for hours and its still very accurate. All in all a good night and we got 22 possums.

Saw this at lgs, and just sold a rifle so thought Id give it a try. Haven't shot it yet but here's a quick pre shoot review. This one has an 18" fluted bull barrel with a target style crown similar to what my anshutz has, and a grey laminated stock. Its in 5.56nato/223 cal. It also has a spiral fluted bolt, the bolt knob is checkered. It feels quite good quality for a budget rifle. Barrel attachment looks similar to a savage and the action looks similar to a Howa mini. It uses an ar style mag. The trigger is one of those ones with a blade in it which is becoming popular with a few makers, it breaks nicely but has a slight gritty feel but as this rifle is basically new that should smooth out after a little bit of use or ill take a look at it myself. I haven't taken it out of the stock so not sure if or how its bedded. I think they were going for the tactical look with this model as it has that look about it, I have topped this one off with a 3.5-10x40 nikko stirling gold crown. If it preforms ok Ill look at getting it threaded for a suppressor.

So had a bit of a whoopsie reloading some grendel ammo. After about 15 rounds I noticed for some reason they werent seated concentric. I didnt measure it but you can easily see it buy eye. s**t now what am I going to do? I know ill do a test and see how badly it affects the accuracy of this particular rifle. Its a howa mini and im running a supressor as well. To my surprise it still shot how it normally does. I even loaded the rounds so the projectiles were facing a different way each time one was chambered
