After a bit of playing around with some handloads it looks like this rifle isn't going to benefit from the extra case capacity. It still likes the load that It was running as a standard hornet. It will still have the benefits of less brass stretch due to the shoulder that forms after fire forming it.

had it out again today. tried 3 different loads using a 75gn speer. I had some cfe 223 varget and some 4064. shot a 1" group at 100 with the varget second best was with cfe and way behind was the 4064 which is strange as its the same powder as varget as far as I know..

Firearms / 22 hornet project
« on: October 08, 2023, 09:04:29 pm »
Finished another project I've been tossing up weather to do or not. This one is a 22 hornet k conversion. I imported a reamer from the us. I have 3 hornets and I picked my single shot nef as the first candidate as I could take the barrel off and see what's going on as I reamed the chamber easier than a bolt action. I reamed the chamber using plenty of lube and going slow. Its turned out well and I had it out fireforming brass for it over the weekend. Happy with it so far..

Firearms / Home made case lube

Tried the home made case lube today on some 243 Ive loaded up to test accuracy on the ph of wifes. Very unscientific way of making it but I used the empty dillon case lube spray bottle, put about a teaspoon of solid lanolin in and filled it up with ipa. It took quite a while for lanolin to dissolve but no worries, I'm not one of those guys that wants instant results as a lot do these days. Pleased to say worked really well and quite a lot cheaper than ready made label brand stuff.

ended up threading the m55 and took it for a shoot. I've heard they are quite an accurate rifle and this one is. Got another project on the go as well, a parker hale 243 that shoots ok but Id like it to shoot better. I'm in the process of doing my first bedding job so a bit nervous about that one...

Went out again weekend just been. Its been a while and it was really wet and boggy, a real workout. Took a 223 this time that I picked up a couple of months ago. Finally got to a point on the farm where I could look over a good part of it and sat in the sun, after a bit a mob of 12+ slowly appeared but at 460m was a bit to far for me to be comfortably shooting with a new to me rifle. Lay in the sun for a while watching hawks, tuis and wood pigeons flying around when I heard some bleating a bit closer than the mob i was watching. Had a look around and spotted 4 goats at 170m that's more a distance I'm comfortable with. Watch for a bit and then took a shot, 1 down. The others just stood there looking at their mate lying there so I had a second shot and got another one. what a good weekend.

Rainy crappy weather so needed to find something to do inside. Nothing amazing, I've got a few things sitting around idly so had a look a what I had. First a slazenger m55 that's had a rail fitted to it then a rummage around and I came up with some mounts and a period (sort of) tasco 4x40 scope, one with the old tv screen type view when you look through it. Threw it together to see how it felt and looked. Looks ok scopes clear but could do with lower mounts. Metal work needs a bit of a tidy up and reblue might even thread it for a suppressor, and while I'm at it may as well redo the stock. I just want to take it out and shoot it and make sure its ok in that department and then ill do the reblue and wood. After I've done that one I've got another aussie to do as well, a sportco semi.

Nicole is still there, see her at the gunshows. She's actually one of the few (only) mps that will reply to an email if you send her one. It may take some time but she actually replies that gets my vote in itself

All the 243s I've had so far prefer under 100gn pills, around the 85gn mark seems to be the sweet spot for the ones I've had. My wife makes the vids that have editing in them, to tech for me.
