Hunting / Red light and possums
« Last post by Hobby hunter on August 14, 2022, 02:08:48 am »
Id heard that using a red light spooks animals less so decided to try it. I got a red filter that clips onto my spotlight and took it out possum shooting tonight. So far learnt a couple of things. Cant see **** with it on and it didnt seem to make much difference to the possums. Took it off and saw way more of them but will try it a couple more times just to make sure..

So we had a pretty good trip. Didn't manage to shoot anything but saw a little bit of sign and found a nice spot that we will need to check out once it gets warmer. We were able to drive up onto the end of a ridge after a creek crossing that took a couple of goes as the far side bank was pretty steep for the little suzuki with crappy at tyres on it. Once up there we parked up and kind of followed our noses along the ridge there were a few clearings along the way and at the end of it the creek was flowing down the valley. we stayed along the bush line and were walking along the edge of a large open flat quite open and covered in grass, I marked it on the gps as surely this would have to be a good spot when it warms up. We kept going up the creek finding more clearings eventually coming to the bottom of a waterfall It was beautiful up there.
Standing there looking at the water fall got me thinking of a way to get up to the top of it to see what was further on after looking around i found a track heading up the side of it we started following it when something strange happened. As we were walking along I noticed something brown sitting in the middle of the track that didn't quite look like a rock, then it moved I thought cool it must be a little Kiwi. We stopped and then I realized it was a morepork, Having heard different things about seeing them in the day time we were a bit hesitant so we stood there for a while and just watched it we were only about a meter from it and it just sat there in the middle of the track looking around It wasn't frightened of us and just sat there. After watching it for a while and remembering what we had heard about them we decided it was there to stop us going further my wife filmed it and took a pic and we headed back to the 4wd.
the next day we went to a different place and just did a loop walk part of it went through the Toi canyon thourally recommend going and having a look. Back to the hut for the last night get the fire going and cook some tea.

Going for a hunt tomorrow and sunday. Rivers are still pretty high down here and Im hoping to be able to get across it into a spot that always has a lot of sighn in it. If not have to check out some other places...

Always looking for something to do so decided a retro build would be different and pretty easy. i wanted to do it with one of my existing rifles as I'm trying really hard to stop buying any more rifles for a while. First it needed to be old. My oldest is a sporter mauser which could of worked except for the plastic stock. So looking through them I decided on the browning. It ticked a few boxes so that's the one I used. I think it might be quite late model but it is a wooden stock and blued with no plastic on it nothing fancy had the classic lines and its an old classic caliber being 22 hornet. Nothing much really in the build as they were basic and simple back then without all the gadgets etc. I took the tactical style scope off it and found an old redfield 4-12x40 with the old gloss finish. Its a really clear scope and the mag range is perfect for the little round. All up it looks good just need to get it out and do final sight in..

Had a cool little trip found a quiet place to stay. Got invited to a party so went and checked that out for a while. On the way back we called into gun city in hamilton and hunting and fishing. I usually just go and see what they have in secondhand firearms. Hnf had a really nice 700 adl 222. Then we slowly made our way home. Man there's a lot of water around mercer ways. Never seen the waikato so high before..

So this afternoon my wife was at a mall and saw a Michael Hill get smashed up and robbed. Why are these guys only targeting this particular franchise?
