was supposed to go for a shoot today but as usual the weather was crap when I have 2 days off so it was a good opportunity to get into the bluing job. Ill admit I'm not that good at it but still keen to try it and get better at it. I put 10 coats on the barrel and then ran out of liquid blue. this time I was rinsing between coats with boiled water to keep the steel warm. For the final coat since I had no liquid left i put a coat of bluing paste on and that seemed to darken it up nicely. now its sitting with a coating of oil on it to cure overnight. then I can reassemble it. Also waiting for some quick detach swivels.

Tried some 62gn handloads in it yesterday with varget. 62 grainers were some kind of russian projectile soft point with a concave base. Was shooting consistant 1/2" or a knats arse over groups at 100m with it off a bipod and rear bag

Got the mohawk out today to see how it would go. I started out with some factory win super x 100gn factory loads so i had a base to start from, it shot a 4" group with that which didnt really surprise me as in my experiance only and im sure others will have different experiances but of the 243s ive owned im yet to have one that liked the heavier end of the scale in projectiles. I put together 2 handloads using imr 4064. The first of those was with a 85gn sierra hpbt which has shot well in the other 243s i have owned I shot a 3" group with these. Then came the speer hot core 80gn load and that went 2". These were at 100m off bags. So being an old rifle with who knows how many rounds through it it will be ok for a bush gun. Its no target rifle and was never built to be one maybe tweaking the 80gn load might squeeze a little bit more out of it..

picked it up today all threaded and ready to go again. Got a 14x1 thread put on it as with most my rifles so the same suppressor will fit on it that I use for most of the others

Had it apart and given it a bit of a clean up. Scope is a japanese tasco so not to bad. cleaned out the trigger mechanism and lubed it put a rear pillar in it and did a similar mod the same as what I do with the howa mini  bottom plastic. Got a packet of factory ammo to give me a starting point for the accuracy testing and Ill do some hand loads with some 80 and 85 grain projectiles I have. If it shoots ok Ill take it apart again and redo the stock and re blue the metal work

Just been on a bit of a holiday down south a bit, and as usual a visit to a local fun shop is on the list of things to do when on holiday right. So in I went and had a look through the second hand firearms and in amongst them was a remington 600 mohawk in 243. Took it off the rack and had a good look at it, it was a bit knocked around but to be expected from a rifle of that age but hadnt been butchered so wasnt anything to worry to much about. Its also wearing a scope from the same era it looks to be a 4x40 redfield of some type. Havnt shot it yet but ill put something up when I do. All in all a nice set up that ill just give a tidy up and it can keep the other retro rifle company.
