New Rifle

Just picked up my first rifle. Its a basically new savage mk2 22lr. Looks like it hasn't been used much. It only has open sights on it. I will try it with those first and see how it goes. If I was to put a scope on it what would you guys suggest?

The savage you have are a nice rifle. My partner has one and she loves it. She bought a couple of 5 shot mags for hers as the 10 shot was a bit uncomfortable when carrying it. Scopes are a personal choice and it depends what you are doing. Full on target guys like lots of mag but with your type od rifle Im guessing youll probably be doing casual targets and possums/rabbits. I have a variety of scopes mounted on my 22s ranging from fixed 4x to 4-12x on the rifle i use in competetions. A 3-9x would cover all bases and if you buy a decent quality one you could put it on a centerfire at a later date if you decide to go that way. The 22 I use the most has an old 1.5-5 tasco on it. Well. HH pretty well covered it. It's personal choice. (granted, you might not have much experience to draw on here...)

All the mk2s I've had hands on have been absolute tackdrivers, shoot well above what they cost.

Shooting irons is a skill well worth having, and keeping in practice. If you're not too old or too blind, they'll do you fine.

As a "first rifle"... the world is your oyster. A 3-9x scope as said above will cover you for most normal shooting you're likely to do with it.

Spend a little more on the scope than you're comfortable with, and it should last until you know what else you want, and wont lose much on the resell.

Ok thanks. Id be looking at the lower end of the price scale if I purchase a scope.
What are the better ones in that range that aren't junk?

In the lower price bracket I tend to go for the nikko stirlings never had a problem with one so far. We also have the lower end bushnels and Ive got a couple of early japanese tascos. Further up Ive got a sightron on my comp 22 rimfire and thats i nice scope as well. Also got a couple of simmons as well. Dont forget decent mounts and try and mount it as low as whats comfortable to reduce canting errors. I sight mine in for 50m. That seems to handle the rimfire distances I shoot at.

Nikko Stirling Mountmaster, fixed 4 power, Comes with mounts to fit most rimfire dovetailed receivers. Absolutely bulletproof. Anyone advising you to put high magnification on a .22lr is to put it politely, an owner-operator.
