ugly annealer
« on: »
Bought one of these a while back and slowly accumulating the other bits for it. Its a really well made machine that even comes with all the bits to use it for different cals and spare parts. got the gas torch set up now and I believe I need to heat brass to 450deg c so have just picked up a digi thermometer. All I need now is a few spare uninterrupted hours (what's that) to have a play and set it up. Got some x55 and grendel brass first up.

Well finally got to have a play today. I love this thing, learnt a few things as well mainly my infrared thermometer is a piece of crap  >:( so after I figured that out i had to figure out another way of figuring out when it was at the right temp. Pretty unscientific but as it wasn't dark and one way they say is when the brass just starts to glow I got a new piece of brass you could clearly see the heat color marks and  I also saw somewhere that when the flame just turns orange is when its at the right temp, this and the color marks coincided with each other so that seemed pretty good to me and away I went.
After the first batch I went rummaging around looking for more brass to anneal and ended up spending over 4hrs doing it while playing around trying to make a couple of antennas. It takes a little bit to set machine up but its not hard if your good with your hands and think about it. It comes with all the tools you need and parts to swap over for different cals. Its a pretty well thought out package and I wouldn't even bother trying to make it for what it cost. the only thing that it doesn't come with is the gas torch which I already had and just got an adaptor to run it off a bbq bottle.

Was at it again today, sorted through a lot of my brass did a batch of grendel brass and a couple of batches of 25 06. also bought some greek 303 back to life. After it had been fired I tried reloading it but the necks wouldn't size back down they would spring back to I guess the chamber dimensions so had nothing to loose buy running it through the annealer and tried resizing it most of it resized fine so that was a bonus..

ran the annealed grendel brass through the fl die today pressure required to do the operation was very consistent. Next thing to do is run the annealed 25 06 brass through the 6.5 06 fl die.

So looking into the thermometer thing it looks like they dont like shiny surfaces so maybe its not a piece of crap after all :-\
